Night vigil.

Softly feet patter up and down the hall,
Bouncing babe in arms, rhythmic footfall.
Murmured voices echo through the night.
Bleary eyes blink back first rays of light.

And in those arms safety is sought,
No warm bed will do as sleep is fought.
And daddy’s arms won’t do the trick,
It’s only mum tonight, little one will pick.

So back and forth she continues on,
With a rock, a shush, a singing of song.
Till her little love falls back to sleep,
And in the dark she hears not a peep.

It’s long and lonely and she aches to lie,
But she isn’t alone under twinkling sky.
All over towns and cities near and far,
Bleary-eyed parents watch the same rising star.
