Jacaranda Trees

I dreamt of jacaranda trees,

Purple flowers littering the floor.

The smell of Spring lingered in the air,

And your silhouette in the door.

You stepped into the morning light,

The early heat prickling our skin.

Zinc on your nose and wide-brimmed hat,

Ready for the day to begin.

And as we drove towards the coast,

Your arms outstretched to catch the wind,

The light danced upon your upturned face,

Twinkling eyes, mischievous grin.

You rushed towards the ocean,

Greeting it like an old friend.

laughter bounced back across the waves,

The source from where all wounds can mend.

I watched you take your world in,

And hug it close with all your might.

Chasing seagulls up and down the beach,

Waving them off as they took flight.

As the sun kept track across the sky,

And the air turned a salty warm.

We ate our fill of Spring’s sweet fruits,

Playing again until you were worn.

The afternoon rays began to dip,

A soft breeze lifted up off the sea.

We bade goodbye to the ocean tide,

And headed back just you and me.

The birds sang their song to the cooling day,

As light kaleidoscoped through the trees.

A tired little body snuggled into mine,

These childhood adventures my fondest memories.
